Welcome to What's the Score at the Bodleian?

This website is a gateway to digitised copies from the Bodleian's collections of piano music intended for the amateur market in mid-Victorian Britain. The scores, many of which have richly decorated or illustrated covers, can be found here, along with a growing database of descriptive metadata to enable the sheet music to be searched and located.

What's the Score at the Bodleian? is a pilot project to investigate the potential for using crowd-sourcing to generate descriptive metadata to improve access to parts of the Bodleian's collections of sheet music. The project is focussing initially on this previously uncatalogued portion of the music collections and is collaborating with Zooniverse, world leaders in crowd-sourcing technology, to gather descriptive information about the sheet music from members of the public via a companion website. This is intended to improve access to the material, encourage wider engagement with the Bodleian's music collections and facilitate research into amateur music-making during the Victorian period.
